We all know how delicious a juicy blueberry, blackberry or strawberry tastes. We know that berries contain important vitamins. But did you know that berries can help  keep your memory sharp? According to the United States Department of Agriculture Human Nutrition Research Center on Aging, berries have a direct effect on the brain and help to prevent memory loss associated with aging. Researchers said that berries improve brain function and may even help stave off age-related conditions, such as Alzheimer’s and dementia. The researchers studied the effects of blueberries, blackberries, cranberries and strawberries.
Berries are high in natural antioxidants, which bind with free radicals in the cells and help to remove these harmful toxins from the body. Berries also prevent inflammation that can result in brain cell damage by changing the way that the neurons in the brain communicate. Berries are rich in vitamins A, C and B and contain trace minerals like zinc and magnesium. It’s easy to add fresh berries to your daily diet. Toss a handful of blueberries or slice up some strawberries and add them to a cup of low-fat yogurt or a bowl of whole grain oatmeal for a delicious breakfast or snack. Berries are delicious in cold, whole grain breakfast cereal and add a natural sweetness to your cornflakes or bran flakes. Mix your favorite fresh, raw berries with some vegetables and blend for a delicious smoothie drink. No matter how you eat them, your body will benefit from berries.
